PARIS, FRANCE — Recently, Circle Christian School Junior Canon Claycomb took part in the prestigious Junior Ryder Cup Golf Tournament in Paris France.
The tournament matches the 12 best Junior Golfers in the United State (boys and girls) against Europe’s best 12 golfers in a series of match play format over 2 days. The United States won the event for the sixth consecutive time, clinching the title by a score of 12 1/2 to 11 1/2. Canon recently shared his experience
“Paris was an amazing experience I will never forget. As a junior Ryder cup player, we received many perks throughout the week. It started by flying from Orlando to Atlanta to meet the team then flying from Atlanta to Paris alongside my good friends. We had 3 practice rounds and throughout our practice days, we were able to experience some awesome things outside of golf such as Disneyland Paris, VIP access to the Disney castle light show, and team time filled with food and ping pong. The tournament went great starting with an alternate shot in the morning. I was paired alongside Ricky Castillo from Northern California who is a buddy of mine and committed to the University of Florida. We won pretty handily and I made a 30 footer on the 15th hole to secure the match. In the afternoon I was paired alongside Erica Shepherd in best ball. Once again we were able to win easily and I made 6 birdies in 15 holes. The last day found us 3 points ahead and playing singles. Unfortunately, that day didn’t play out as the previous days had and even with me shooting 4 under with no bogeys I lost my match 2&1. I will never forget watching as my teammates closed out the Ryder Cup and upon seeing that final putt drop we rushed the green and began our celebration. It was truly something I’ll never forget. The last day we traveled to Le Golf National to play 6 holes on the real Ryder cup course. I was filled with nerves and was able to meet and talk to the likes of Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, and even Tiger Woods. I played good once again holding a 20 footer for birdie on one and chipping in, in front of 4,000 people on hole 15. The entire experience was that of a dream and I’m so thankful Circle Christian has been so flexible and understanding and allowing me to travel and live out my dream.
Canon has committed to the University of Alabama and is rated as the second-best player in the Amateur Junior Golf Association rankings. Congratulations Canon. We are so proud to have you represent the USA and the Circle community so well!
